Uber and Zipline Partner to Bring Drone Delivery to Millions of Americans
Uber announced on 17 August 2026, in a release issued through Business Wire, a partnership with drone operator Zipline that brings drone delivery to Uber Eats and gives Uber a strategic investment position in Zipline. The companies state a target of one million drone deliveries a day by the end of 2029, with first deployments later this year in markets where Zipline already flies. Zipline reports operating on four continents, a delivery every 20 seconds, more than 5,000 hospitals and health facilities served and more than 135 million autonomous commercial miles. The figures are company reported and the 2029 number is a target, not current capability.
- 135M Autonomous Miles Flown
- 5,000 Hospitals And Health Sites Served
- 20 Seconds Between Deliveries
An aggregator taking an equity position in a delivery mode is a signal about scarcity rather than price: Uber did not sign a rate card, it bought into the asset. The flight record behind it was earned on medical delivery, where reliability is not optional, so the aerial layer arrives already qualified in the hardest category rather than the easiest. Restaurant and grocery buyers get a third mode to plan against, which changes promise times, packaging and the failed delivery path before drones are widely visible.
